Dear Ladies and Gentlemen! We are glad to introduce you to the ecological indices of Zaporizhstal JSC job performance based on the results of 2008. The achievement of such indices is a result of the realization of the Programme on technical re-equipping and modernization of the basic Works’ equipment in the period up to 2015. To reduce environment pollution continuous work is being carried out at Zaporizhstal. Measures are also being taken to improve the operation of the processing equipment, to equip emission and discharge sources with cleaning units, to recover and use industrial waste. As a result improvement of all Zaporizhstal JSC ecological indices is achieved. Gross emissions of polluting substances into atmosphere have reduced in 2008 by 7841 tons, including dust by 2630 tons and gaseous impurities by 5211 tons. Reduction of emissions into atmosphere is stipulated by: - carrying out control and adjustment of environmental protection equipment, including the aspiration unit from the tail parts of sintering machines ¹¹1-6, which was put into operation in October 2007; - adjustment of technological processes on environmental protection and fuel using equipment during production reduction of the main types of products.

Current expenditures on environmental protection annually total to more than 90,0 mln UAH/year, which allows to efficiently operate the environmental installations of the Works and in due time to solve the current ecological problems. In 2007 to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases in the framework of carrying out the provisions of the Kyoto Protocol Zaporizhstal JSC has concluded an agreement on joint implementation projects. In December 2007 the Ministry for Environmental protection of Ukraine issued supporting letters under Zaporizhstal JSC joint implementation projects. In 2008 project design documents have been worked out for the joint implementation project “Construction of the air separation unit VRU-60)”. The information is displayed on the site of the International Committee on supervisory control of joint implementation of the Secretary of UN on climate change. In October a committee of independent experts was working at Zaporizhstal. It inspected the work of the new air separation unit VRU-60 in the framework of the project “Reconstruction of the oxygen-compressor shop” and monitored the operating indices of the unit. In 2008 the Works signed a contract with the Austrian firm “SIEMENS VAI” on the purchase of equipment for reconstruction of the steel production process with the construction of the converter shop. Advanced payment has been made under the contract at the sum of 304,815 mln UAH. After finishing reconstruction of the steel making production emissions of harmful substances into atmosphere will reduce by 13100 t/year. Equipment has been delivered to the Works and construction and erection of the PCI unit is being carried out. The technology will allow to completely exclude the use of natural gas in the blast furnace production. Influence on the water reservoirs was marked by the reduction of emissions of polluting substances into the water reservoirs in 2007 by 4975 tons and reduction of return waters discharge into the Dnieper River by 2,213 mln m3.
During implementation of water protecting measures directed towards economy and rational usage of water resources by the Works in 2000-2008 the following has been achieved: - reduction of return waters discharge into the Dnieper River by 11,47mln m3; - reduction of polluting substances discharge by 11,9 thousand tons. At the Works the programme on effective usage of recycling waters in the operating process and reduction of discharge into reservoirs has been realized. For this purpose 11 closed recycling systems have been built and they are being efficiently used. As a result of effective work of the recycling systems more than 200 000 tons/year of iron containing slime are collected and returned to production. This is an additional source of raw material and no additional expenditure is needed for its burial. To reduce the volume of return water discharge and improve the qualitative composition of water in the Dnieper River measures are being taken at the Works to convert the existing pickling lines in cold rolling shop No.1 to a closed cycle on the line for hydrochloric acid pickling with the installation of regeneration of waste pickling solutions and further use of recycled products in the production process. Its implementation, and as a consequence, removal of the existing sulfuric acid pickling line, will allow to reduce by 1,5 mln m3/year discharge of insufficiently cleaned water into the off-site slime removing complex and in such a way have a closed cycle of production. Activity of the Works regarding production waste treatment in 2008 was marked by the reduction of the quantity of formed waste which is connected with carrying out the job on minimization of its formation and with the reduction of the production volume. The performance indices regarding production waste treatment are the following: - formed waste — 4109,471 thousand tons, including metallurgical slag 2032,260 thousand tons (general reduction by 246,1 thousand tons); - waste used at the Works: 1942,142 thousand tons; - waste realized: 1069,225 thousand tons; - sent for storage 1105,004 thousand tons.
In 2008 at the Works an Integrated Management System of Quality, Environmental Protection and Labour Safety was introduced. In October 2008 the Works underwent certified audit and received a Certificate of conformity of the IMS of Quality, Environmental Protection and Labour Safety of the Works to the requirements of international standards ISO 9001:2000, ISO 14001:2004, ÎÍSÀS 18001:2007, ILO-OSH 2001. This is an acknowledgement of an effectively chosen ecological policy, high level of ecological conscience and production culture. |
