1943 — ruins of blast furnaces.

The War 1941—1945 interrupted the peaceful work of Zaporizhzhya metallurgists. Till the shut-down of “Zaporizhstal” Works, the shops produced metal for defence industry. On August 18, 1941 the Works suspended its work. In October 1941, under heavy frontline conditions, workers and engineers of the Works finished dismantling, loading and shipping 50,000 tons of unique metallurgical equipment to the East of the country.

After liberation of Zaporizhzhya from fascist troops in October 1943 restoration of the Works started. In this first post-war period all returned equipment was installed and assembled in newly erected buildings in the shortest possible time with the help of builders, erectors and those engineers and workers of “Zaporizhstal” who came back.

1947 — restoration of “Zaporizhstal” was announced as an urgent task.

Restoration of “Zaporizhstal” was announced as an urgent task in 1947. Majority of former equipment was returned from the Urals and Siberia and new machinery was supplied, too. The Annual plan of 1947 “Zaporizhstal” workers fulfilled in November by commissioning the first phase of reconstruction: in June-September Blast Furnace #3, power station, turbo blowers facilities, slabbing mill, hot strip mill and cold strip mill were commissioned. The first trainloads of steel sheets were delivered to car factories of Moscow and Gorky cities already in September 1947. In 1949 the pre-war volume of production was achieved in all processing stages.

In 1950 the volume of production at the plant was not only restored but it surpassed the pre-war production by 1.6 times. In the years following along with construction of new shops and metallurgical units the major growth of pig iron, steel and hot-rolled strips production, increase of product range, improvement of quality were achieved thanks to revamping and updating of the shops’ equipment, introducing advanced technologies, means of automation, based on the latest achievements of science and technology.

1951 — the Sintering Shop and Tinplate Shop were commissioned.

In the following period the sintering area of sintering machines was increased, three blast furnaces were reconstructed with increase of their volume, five open hearth furnaces increased the charge twice as much. In blast and open hearth furnaces natural gas and oxygen were widely used. The slabbing mill and the continuous hot strip rolling mill were thoroughly reconstructed. The arrangements carried out in the open-hearth furnaces shop and at rolling mills allowed to considerably increase the mass of ingots and work-pieces which resulted in increase of mills productivity.

In 1959, for the first time in the country, the shop for production of cold-roll formed sections was commissioned, producing over 500 sections of different shapes and sizes from low carbon and alloyed steels. These products are in great demand in machine-building and in other fields of industry.
