On April 21, 1963 the first processing stage of cold-rolling shop ¹3 was completed. On 27 April the team of the senior rolling mill operator, V. Nemin, composing of A. Vasilyev, V. Barziya, V. Snizhko, E. Shevchenko, M. Belovol, produced the first cold-rolled large-size plates of special steel on mill “2800”.
The goal of the shop was to produce high-strength and heavy-duty metals for the needs of the military-industrial complex. D.F. Ustinov, who was at the head of the defence industry of the USSR at that time, had a direct bearing on the decision to construct cold-rolling shop ¹3.
By the end of 1963 the shop produced 10,6 thousand tons of cold-rolled sheets. A year later the output has been doubled. To increase the efficiency of the mill in 1973 electric spark bossing equipment for the support rolls was installed.
On February 8, 1976, the polishing department of the shop was put into operation.
In May 1987 on results of the All-Union Competition of collectives of metallurgical units the collective of mill “2800” was given the title " The Best Rolling Mill ". In 1994 cold-rolling shop ¹ 3 mastered the production of hot-rolled sheets, which was a new kind of product for the shop.
In 1990-1997 the shop mastered “know-how” for the production of tool steel.
The products of cold-rolling shop ¹ 3 were used to produce nuclear submarines and space-rocket complexes. In particular, Zaporizhstal rolling mill operators produced rolled products of titanium alloy for the program “Buran”.
For the development of specific kinds of products a group of Zaporizhstal workers were decorated with special medals of the Academy of Science of the USSR, named after S.P. Korolyov and Y.A. Gagarin, " For assistance in development of rocket technique and space exploration ". The former plant manager, L.D. Yupko, and the present chief of the Works? Central Laboratory, V.S. Movshovich were among the awarded. |
