The slabbing mill was put into operation on April 1, 1937. Not a single European country had such a unit at that time. By the end of the year the mill rolled 193452 thousand tons of metal. In 1938 it rolled 669,6 thousand tons, and in 1940 — 717 thousand tons. Before the evacuation in August 1941 the mill worked without major overhaul.
After the war the mill renewed its work on July 30, 1947. In 1972 the slabbing mill was reconstructed. A grab crane was installed. A heat treatment department, a storehouse for slabs, a storehouse for ingots and a new administrative building were built.

In April 1987 the first domestic slabbing mill celebrated its 50th anniversary. During this period the mill has rolled about 147 million tons of metal. This is quite a lot taking into consideration that the mill electric machines have been designed to roll 50-70 million tons. Naturally, the mill required modernization.

As a matter of fact, it has been continuously carried out. The last innovations were the following: in 1995 the shears were replaced on the slabbing mill; in 1999 the stand drive of the vertical rolls was modernized; in 2000 the automatic ingot heating system in the soaking pits was introduced.
