 Zaporizhstal pays great attention to social programs, such as provision of flats for its workers, organization of their health improvement, recreation and leisure time, sports activities. Special supporting programmes for pensioners, former Zaporizhstal workers, also exist.
An after-work sanatorium belonging to Zaporizhstal JSC is located on the Khortitsa Island, where annually over 4,000 people rest and improve their health. There are three recreation centers on the bank of the Dnieper River and on the Azov Sea shore, where annually over 10,000 metallurgists and members of their families rest.
 Annually more than 4000 children from families of metallurgists rest in two summer camps for children. Zaporizhstal has 11 kindergartens, two of which are of a sanatorium type (for children with early presentation of tuberculosis). There are also three rehabilitation groups for sickly children.
The pre-school institutions are meant for 1232 preschoolers but at present 1370 preschool children attend them. A child’s dentist room is functioning in one of the kindergartens.
The Works has a Palace of Culture and a sports stadium for 30 thousand seats. A modern track-and-field sports hall has been built for the metallurgists and the members of their families.
In 1981 to conduct sports activities a coaching center (since 2004 a Sports Complex) was established at the Works, which includes a track-and-field sports hall, a yacht club, a water-sports center and a tourist club. Sporting competitions, coaching of adults and children from athletics and Olympic gymnastics sports schools, different sports games of SC “Metallurg” sports groups and physical culture lessons of different Zaporizhstal shops and departments take place in the Sports Complex. Volleyball, football, basketball, table tennis, weight lifting, arm wrestling, chess and draughts teams of the Works are trained there too. In the Sports Complex lessons in physical culture and health improving groups on fitness, aerobics, bodybuilding, court and table tennis, martial arts, yoga and different sports games take place. Since 1981 and to the present day sporting competitions starting from school championships to championships of Ukraine and international competitions in various kinds of sports take place in the sports hall.
The Sports Complex has coached Olympic Games finalists and champions, and prize-winners of world and European championships in gymnastics, track-and-field events, judo and Greco-Roman wrestling. In February 2004 the renovated field-events sports hall was commissioned. The best synthetic covering in the world "Mondo" allows us to consider the sports complex one of the best sports centers not only in Ukraine but in Europe too.  
The Zaporizhstal yacht club and the water-sports center are located on the bank of the Dnieper River. The yacht club is located in a picturesque place nearby the Dnieper Hydroelectric Power Station. The total area of the yacht club is 1.2 hectares. All-year-round coaching in sailing is carried out in the yacht club. The yacht club has three boatsheds and an administrative building in which a companion cabin, a classroom and a training class are located. On the basis of the yacht club Championships of Ukraine and Ukrainian Cups in yachting sports and annual competitions on prizes of the Hero of Ukraine, V.A. Satskiy, take place. The water-sports center of the Sports Complex is located near the Preobrazhenskiy Bridge. It occupies an area of 1.7 hectares. In the water-sports center sportsmen get coached in canoe rowing and paddling, boating, water activities, court tennis and they do physical exercises too. Zaporizhstal JSC Games which have been taking place since 1950 are one of the most massive workers’ sports games in Ukraine. They gather more than 5000 Zaporizhstal employees and members of their families who participate in 12 different kinds of sports. |
