 Zaporizhstal gives much attention to social programs, such as provision of flats for its workers, organization of their healthy recreation and leisure time, sports activities. Special supporting programmes for pensioners, former Zaporizhstal workers, also exist.
An after-work sanatorium is located on the Khortitsa Island, where over 4,000 people rest annually. There are three recreation centres on the bank of the Dnieper River and on the Azov Sea shore, where over 10,000 metallurgists and members of their families rest annually.
 Annually more than 4000 children from metallurgist families rest in two summer camps for children. Zaporizhstal has 14 kindergartens, two of them are of a sanatorium type. There are also three rehabilitation groups for ailing children.
The Works has a Palace of Culture and a sports stadium for 30 thousand seats. A modern athlete manege has been built for the metallurgists and the members of their families.
To conduct sports activities a coaching centre has been opened at the Works, which includes the athlete manege, the yacht club and the water-sports centre. Sporting competitions, coaching of adults and children are carried out in the manege. Volleyball, football and basketball teams of the Works are trained there too. Since 1981 sporting competitions starting from school championships to championships of Ukraine, the USSR and international competitions in various kinds of sports have taken place in the sports club “Metallurg”. Children and youth Olympic reserve schools in track-and-field events, gymnastics and football function there. Sports club “Metallurg” has coached Olympic Games? champions, and prize-winners of the world championships in gymnastics, track-and-field events, judo and Greco-Roman wrestling. In February 2003 the renovated athlete manege was commissioned. The world?s best synthetic covering "Mondo " allows us to consider the sports complex one of the best sports centres not only in Ukraine but in Europe too. The Zaporizhstal yacht club and the water-sports centre are located on the bank of the Dnieper River. The yacht club is located in a picturesque place nearby the Dnieper hydroelectric power station. The total area of the yacht club is 1.2 hectares. All-year-round coaching in sailing is carried out in the yacht club. The yacht club has three covered slips and an administrative building in which a mess room, a classroom and a training class are located. On the basis of the yacht club championships of Ukraine, Cups and championships of Ukraine, competitions on prizes of the Hero of Ukraine, V.A. Satskiy, take place. Successful performance of the “Metallurg” yacht club sportsmen in 2002 in the Championship of Ukraine entitles yachtsmen to participate in the Olympic Games in Athens. The water-sports centre is located near the Preobrazhenskiy Bridge. It occupies an area of 1.7 hectares. In the water-sports centre sportsmen get coached in canoe rowing and paddling, boating, tennis and they do physical exercises. The shop cross-country and tourism teams are trained there. Competitions in cross-country, orienteering and tourism are held there in the framework of the Games of Zaporizhstal JSC and the regional committee of metallurgists and miners. Coaching is done all-the-year-round. |
