“Ask the Doctor” of Rinat Akhmetov Foundation: how to prepare for vaccination

Rinat Akhmetov Foundation continues to broadcast “Ask the Doctor” live programs as part of the “Fighting against COVID-19 in Ukraine” project. This time, the answers to high-profile issues were given by an infectious disease physician, lecturer of National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”, Vladimir Kurpita.

In particular, the expert said that the post-COVID syndrome could become a real matter to be concerned about and a reason to see a psychologist or psychotherapist.

– I believe that these professions would be in a great demand in the nearest future. The post-COVID symptoms are mainly observed within three-four weeks after the illness. Still, they can last up to 6 to 12 months. And this kind of problem definitely cannot be solved without support of a specialist, – Vladimir Kurpita said.

He also explained in details how to approach the vaccination.

– Nowadays, the general opinion is that you should prepare yourself for the vaccination.  In fact, getting ready for the vaccination includes two main aspects. The first one is to assess your health condition, for example, if you have allergy to anything, tell your doctor about this. For the second, you should see your family doctor and speak about possible consequences. There is no necessity to perform any preliminary analyses. Unfortunately, side effects are feasible, like with any other vaccines, however, they are not so critical comparing to the disease itself. Two aspects matter in treating the coronavirus: the first one is a cure that has not been found yet; the second one is the creation of an immunity against the virus. It could be created artificially, by making vaccination. However, the vaccination does not save you from contamination, it namely facilitates a severe progression of the disease. Or it could be achieved naturally: by going through the illness, – the doctor emphasized.

The doctor believes that a new wave of coronavirus may come to Ukraine anytime soon:

– This depends on the rate of the virus mutation. And, most probably, it will happen at the end of September – beginning of October, when people will get back from their vacations.
