On 21 May 2020, jointly with the Ministry of Health and the Association of Anesthesiologists of Ukraine, the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation held an online conference for medical personnel working with artificial lungs ventilation devices. It was a three-hour webinar, during which leading experts of the Ministry of Healthcare shared with state-owned hospital medical workers international best practices in the treatment of COVID-19 and the nuances of working with the latest ALV models.
“Everyone so often a doctor needs to update their knowledge about how to operate specific equipment, especially if they have little or rarely had a chance to work with it. Intensive care units usually do not often have patients who need artificial ventilation. Therefore, this training is extremely important for doctors of infectious hospitals in order to gain new knowledge. The course program includes questions that doctors are most concerned. The first webinar did not cover many theoretical matters. The main goal was to communicate with doctors and answer the questions that they have when providing intensive care for patients with COVID-19. “, said Serhii Dubrov, Professor of the Department of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care of Bogomolets National Medical University, President of the Association of Anesthesiologists of Ukraine.
Serhei Aleksandrovych was one of the webinar speakers. Merited Doctor of Ukraine, Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases of the Bogomolets National Medical University, Professor Olha Holubovska, First Vice-Rector of Bogomolets National Medical University, Professor Yuriy Kuchyn, Anesthesiologist of the Department of X-ray Endovascular Surgery of the Alexander Clinical Hospital in Kyiv Andrii Vysotskyi also shared their experiences.
Before the webinar start, the experts had already received a hundred questions. Even more questions were asked during the online conference. A special chat was created for that purpose. The participating doctors were interested in everything: when to disconnect a patient with a coronavirus from a ALV device, what complications may occur, affected by COVID, how to rehabilitate a patient, who should be connected to a ALV device for a long time. The most important questions were answered in real time.
More than 800 doctors attended the conference from all regions of Ukraine, but in practice, a webinar will help a much larger number of specialists to master the latest ALV devices and the most advanced methods of treating the virus.
“Why is online training so convenient? If you did not have the opportunity to watch it during the actual course, you can always view this course at any other time. ”, said Sergey Dubrov.
The online conference was a follow-up of the educational project of the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation for the doctors operating the ALV devices. Earlier, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, the Association of Anesthesiologists and the Ministry of Digital Transformation, the Foundation launched an online series for doctors and patients “How do the ALV Devices Work?”. It has been viewed more than 130,000 times and received positive comments.

“Since the beginning of the pandemic, the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation has been working in close coordination with the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. This week, we signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Ministry of Health and the Association of Anesthesiologists. Moreover, the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation is making its contribution to the establishment of online training for the medical workers who are the frontliners in the fight against the coronavirus. This measure is compulsory under the conditions of quarantine, but the Foundation wants to help the Ministry of Health to make this format effective and useful. Thousands of doctors in Ukrainian state hospitals are now getting acquainted with new equipment. For example, the Rinat Akhmetov Foundation has purchased 200 ALV devices for state support hospitals in different regions of Ukraine. Some of them have already been installed locally. Now the lives of patients with complications of COVID-19 depend on the ALV devices. I would like to add, that health care workers in hospitals should quickly learn, in order to operate the new devices. Our online conference will help them do this. The Foundation was one of the first in Ukraine to launch a distant medical course. This was in the autumn of 2013, when four tuberculosis dispensaries of Donetsk region received the telecommunications systems for communication with Donetsk Regional Clinical Tuberculosis Hospital, from the Foundation.
