A Garden in the Italian Style Appeared in Zaporizhzhia

With the support of the competition “We are the City”, the Khortytsky National Academy created an unusual recreation area with gabions.

The beautiful is nearby: a garden with gabions was opened at the Khortytsia National Academy. Gabions (from Italian gabbione – “big cage”) are decorative structures made of metal mesh filled with natural stone or coarse pebble. Initially, they strengthened the banks and slopes, but now they are also used as decor. In Zaporizhzhia, there are no analogues of the gabion garden yet, they said at the Academy.

Another feature of the new relaxation zone is tactile benches. Next to the seats there are special vases with small pebbles or shells in them.

Ellina Pozdnyakova-Kirbiatieva, vice-rector of the Khortytsky National Academy for Academic Affairs: “We know that the competition “We are the City” loves creativity, new fresh ideas, therefore, without hesitation we submitted the project of the gabion garden to the competition. It performs not only an aesthetic function, but also a psychological discharge function. Between the benches, there are special vases in which various rock crushed stones, shells are filled in. They help relieve tension and develop manual dexterity. This will help both students during the session and children with disabilities.”

They are planning to expand the garden at the Khortytsia National Academy and to put a gazebo in it. They say that it will be especially beautiful when sakura blossoms in spring.
