On March 18, 1968 the first vehicle transport column based on 25 second-hand automobiles, which were presented to the metallurgists by the city motor depot No.2245, came into being. However the motor depot continued to provide services to “Zaporizhstal”. Still everyone understood that it is more reliable to have ones own motor depot. This transfer of second-hand automobiles became the beginning of the foundation of a new shop. At that time there was only one garage and one repair workshop. That is why for a long time the shop was considered an auxiliary one and the basic loading concerning transportation still fell on the city motor depots. But the Works’ motor depot started gradually expanding.
The Works concluded an agreement with ZIL enterprise which delivered 14 new automobiles. Similarly new automobiles from the Gorky automobile plant were exchanged for metal from Zaporizhstal. The time had come to separate transportation of passengers and freight.
Today the shop has more than 500 different vehicles, i.e. cars and trucks, including trailers. 576 people maintain them. Apart from fulfilling the main production assignments, tasks are set before the motor transport shop employees regarding economy of fuel and combustible and lubricant material.
Thanks to the motor transport shop employees it was possible to transport 3616174.84 tons of freight. Herein the total distance of run of only the trucks amounted to 3 632 588 kilometers, i.e. 5 times to the Moon and back with load. And together with transportation of passengers this figure amounts to 8.9 mln km. Nevertheless last year the production programme was fulfilled by 105.6%. This year everything is going on according to the plan.
It can be said that the most complicated period of the year, i.e. autumn and winter, has been successfully overcome. Still the metallurgists have a lot of unsolved tasks, including reconstruction of the steelmaking production. Actually, it is practically a new construction. What kind of a construction is it which has no transport? That is why the employees of the motor transport shop are ready to accomplish new tasks set by the management of the Works.
