On the 15th of April, 2014 “Zaporizhstal” Integrated Iron and Steel Works announced about the start of a contest “We are the city” for the best social projects among social organizations, municipal institutions and citizens of the city. In 2014 the plant increased financing of the contest to 1 mln. UAH, comparing with the 2013, when the project was allocated 700 thousand UAH.
The contest “We – are the city” takes place in Zaporozhye city alongside with the Metinvest contest “City by our own hands”, together with the nine cities from Donetsk, Dnepropetrovsk and Lugansk regions. Its intention to increase the social activity of people and support of the current projects, focused on the life quality improvement in all host cities of the Metinvest. In 2014 the contest provides implementation projects in new directions – environmental care, development of the business environment and new vacancies creation.
“In 2014 we made a decision to expand the budget of the contest to 1 million UAH, and to expand the maximum amount of the grant from 50 to 100 thousand. Steel plant gives a great possibility to all caring citizens not only to suggest their ideas on development and improvement of their native Zaporozhye city, but also to implement these ideas in life”, – stated the General Director of “Zaporizhstal” Integrated Iron and steel Works Rostyslav Shurma.
The contest will be realized in three stages: participants training and filing the applications, projects review and its expertise, selection of a winner and implementation of the most interesting and the most promising suggestions. It is possible to file an application to the contest till May 19, 2014. The projects will be evaluated by the council of experts basing on the approved criteria – relevance and feasibility, the level of development design idea, originality, social significance, and project sustainability after the funding termination.

It bears reminding that in 2013 citizens of Zaporozhye filed about 130 applications for the contest “We are the city”, whereof 14 social projects had won. For implementation of the best 14 ideas “Zaporizhstal” Integrated Iron and Steel Works allocated up to 50 thousand UAH as a grant for each project, in total amount 700 thousand UAH. The brightest projects, which have been implemented, are “Mobile Social Bus”, “School of the Computer Literacy for Senior Citizens”, Festival of healthy way of living “Street workout” and specialized trainings “The World Around Me” for rehabilitation of weak – eyed children.
In 2013, in other cities hosted by Metinvest, there were filed about 500 applications to the contest “City by our hands”; that is two times more than in 2012. As a result, 95 winners were selected – the authors of the innovation projects. The investments of Metinvest were about 4,6 mln. UAH. This way, with the assistance of enterprises from Krivoy Rog, Metinvest, there was held the opening of the bicycling section, children’s bicycling community and bicycle park.
