“ZAPORIZHSTAL” CARRIES OUT LARGE-SCALE REVAMPING OF GAS-CLEANING SYSTEM IN SINTER SHOP

Within the technological strategy of Metinvest, directed at environmental revamping of the Group’s enterprises, “Zaporizhstal” Integrated Iron and Steel Works is conducting active erection of gas-cleaning systems at four sinter plants – No. 3-6. Investments into the project amount to over UAH 600 million. Upon completion of construction, production equipment of the Works’ sinter plant will be completely equipped with gas cleaning systems in accordance with the Trilateral agreement between the Ministry of Ecology of Ukraine, Zaporizhzhya regional council, and “Zaporizhstal” Steel Works. Investments of the Works into installation of new gas cleaning systems at all six sinter machines of the sinter plant will constitute over USD 70 million.

The Works has been consistently implementing projects, directed at reducing emissions of pollution agents into the atmosphere. Thus, in 2013 the Works commissioned a new sinter machine No.1 with up-to-date high-efficiency gas-cleaning equipment, and in 2015 – new gas-cleaning equipment at sinter machine No. 2. Upon implementation of the project for replacement of the gas-cleaning equipment at all 6 sinter machines, the sinter plant will reach international environmental standards regarding purification level of dust and gas emissions.

At the moment structural steel erection and installation of the gas-cleaning systems main equipment at sinter machines No. 3-6 are in progress on construction site of the Works’ Sinter Plant. In total, up to 3 thousand tonnes of structural steel and up to 2 thousand m3 of concrete will be used in the construction process. The gas-cleaning equipment is supplied by Ukrainian company LLC “Progress Group” (Berdichev Machine-Building Plant “Progress”). The general contractor for construction is LLS “Zaporozhskoye Stroitelno-Montazhnoye Upravleniye” (Zaporizhzhya Construction and Assembling Management). Permit No. IU 114151740127 dated 23 June 2015 for construction of the gas-cleaning units of sinter machines No. 3-6 was issued by the State Architecture and Construction Inspectorate of Ukraine.

New gas-cleaning equipment of sinter machines No. 3-6 will be equipped with two bag filters, ensuring cleaning of air from dust – up to 20 mg/m3, and from sulfurous anhydride (SO2) – up to 400 mg/m3 at each sinter machine. Operating principle of the sinter machines’ gas-cleaning systems involves multistage waste gas purification: gas is cleaned in two bag filters, iron-bearing dust is returned from bag filters back into sinter production.
