On October 21, 2020, a Memorandum was signed between the Zaporizhzhia Regional State Administration and Zaporizhstal PJSC on joint obligations in the field of environmental protection. The document, which will mark the start of cooperation between the regional authorities and big business in the interests of the environmental safety of the region, was signed by the head of the Zaporizhzhia regional state administration Vitaly Bogovin and the General Director of Zaporizhstal Alexander Mironenko.
“The solution of issues related to the ecological situation in the region is important for all of us. For a long time, Zaporizhstal has been systematically carrying out comprehensive work to reduce its impact on the environment. With a memorandum specifying concrete environmental measures of the Works, we confirmed our intention to continue the environmental modernization of production and our readiness to invest in improving the environment in the Zaporizhzhia region, ” Alexander Mironenko stressed at the signing of the Memorandum.
The program of events includes ten environmentally oriented solutions for Zaporizhstal production. The Works is already carrying out some of them: in particular, Zaporizhstal has begun construction of additional aspiration systems for cleaning exhaust gases from the sinter discharge points from the tail parts of sinter machines. The project for the reengineering of the company’s locomotives will also be continued. In the blast furnace shop, “Zaporizhstal” will reconstruct the aspirations of the blast furnaces No. 2 and 4, overhaul the blast furnace No. 5 and the reconstruction of the blast furnace aspiration. The plans include the reconstruction of the furnaces of the steel-making shop, which involves the construction of a new steel-making unit, the reconstruction of the existing one and the gradual decommissioning of the open-hearth furnaces.
In addition, the Works plans to install automatic posts for monitoring the state of atmospheric air at the borders of its own sanitary zones.
Implementation of all these decisions in the horizon of 2020–2027 will reduce dust and nitrogen oxide emissions by 20%.
“The purpose of the Memorandum, as well as of the new regional environmental program, is to make the Zaporizhzhia region ecologically safe and comfortable. These documents are an applied roadmap that contains specific solutions to improve the state of the environment in the Zaporizhzhia region. Zaporizhstal has shown other enterprises an example of a responsible socially oriented business, and the public expects the same transparent and constructive position from every enterprise on the industrial site of Zaporizhzhia, ”said Vitaly Bogovin, head of the Zaporizhzhia region.
In total, since 2012, Zaporizhstal has allocated more than UAH 15 billion for the environmental modernization of the enterprise. In addition to equipping the sinter plant with new aspiration units, blast furnaces No. 2, 3, 4 were reconstructed. A modern hydrochloric acid pickling line was built, which made it possible to completely stop the discharge from cold rolling shop No. 1 into the Dnieper and sulfuric acid vapors into the atmosphere.
